- W1569777314 abstract "In beginning, presumably, there was World 1. Then early July 1970, J. W. Forrester developed World 2 to determine if 'systems dynamics' ... was ... a suitable methodology ... to deal with broad sweep of human affairs and ways which major elements of world ecology interact with each other. The Stiftung Volkswagenwerk then funded a follow-up model called World 3 under direction of Dennis L. Meadows. The world models are subject of four books: World Dynamics, Limits to Growth, Towards Global Equilibrium, and The Dynamics of Growth a Finite World, first three of which have already appeared.' The world models were built specifically to investigate five major trends of global concern: accelerating industrialization, rapid population growth, widespread malnutrition, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and a deteriorating environment ... [and] to understand causes of these trends, their interrelationships, and their implications as much as one hundred years future. The authors argue that, despite their preliminary state, models are sufficiently developed to be of some use to decision-makers. They make two specific claims. First, they claim to have produced the only model existence that is truly global scope.2 Second, they claim to have identified two important features of long-term global situation important for policy: (1) Given current structure of world system, economic growth on planet will peak and turn down in a rather sudden and uncontrollable some time during next century. (2) This decline and fall can be prevented by concerted actions that would yield zero population growth, zero net capital formation, increase use-life and recycling of commodities, increase resource productivity," @default.
