- W1569861041 abstract "Anxiety about how effective l y we pr e par e the r ising generation for adult life represen t s, in part , a profound concer n for soc i al and ec onomi c surviv a l . The recent ' Education for Capa bil it y' manifesto expressed such a concern, p a r t ic u lar l y for Brit a in' s economic perf o rmance . But under l yi ng th e perceived need to launch this manifes to a r e d e epl y rooted and pervasive forces w h ich bi nd together the very fabric of our society and w h ich th e curr ic ulum developer, particularly in CDT, can n o t aff or d to ignore . The manifesto was signed by a l arge nu m ber of eminent academics, industrial i sts, po l i ti c i a ns and trades union leaders , and was pub l i s he d widel y in the national press . L inking educa ti on a nd train i ng as two elements of a single process, i t argued that , in Brit a in the process was imbalanced, loo k i ng t o ward s insular, s cholarly and specialised forms o f understanding , rather than towards action i n th e r e al world. The imbalance was fel t to be h armfu l to indi v iduals, industry and socie t y . It was r oote d in two cultures - the arts and the sciences- a n d pa id little heed to a th i rd culture , recognised widely abroad . Whereas the two cultures of ar ts and s c iences point to particular ways of und er s t an din g and interpreting the natural and man-ma d e w o rld , the third culture was concerned wi t h sh api ng it , with doing, making and organisi n g it . It asser te d that individuals and the na t ion would be n efi t fr om a redressing of the balance towards th i s t hir d cu lt u r e and an ' E ducation for Capability' ." @default.
