- W1570220504 abstract "A survey of hospitals in the city of Nagasaki revealed that of 205 patients whose thyroid glands were resected because of tumors from 1947 to 1960, 45 had histories of exposure to the atomic explosion. All subjects within 5 km of the hypocenter were included in the exposed group. The sex ratio of thyroid tumor incidence was similar in the exposed and unexposed groups, the respective female-male ratios being 6.5: 1 and 5.6: 1. The median age in the tumor group was 30 to 39 yr, whereas in the unexposed the incidence of tumors was spread almost equally over the 20- to 50-yr span. The percentage incidence of various types of thyroid disease in the exposed and unexposed groups was: adenocarcinoma 15.6, 10.6; papillary carcinoma 20.0, 13.8; adenoma 8.9, 1.3; nodular goiter 20.0, 18.8; nonspecific chronic thyroiditis 8.9, 5.6; and toxic goiter 22.2, 47.5. The incidence of malignant tumors was highest in those exposed at an early age; 68% of those developing such tumors were exposed before the age of 10. Occurrence of thyroid cancer was significantly higher in subjects exposed within 2 km of the hypocenter compared with the unexposed, whereas those exposed at 2 to 5 km showedmore » no such difference from the unexposed. The pathological thyroid glands showed no histologic features that could be specifically attributed to radiation exposure. Although the number of cases studied is too small to draw definite conclusions, the results suggest that in some of these cases thyroid cancer is causally related to atomic bomb exposure.
