- W1570302818 abstract "Biro, Matthew. The Dada Cyborg: Visions of the New Human in Berlin. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2009. 318 pp. $88.50 hardcover. S29.50 paperback. Given its scope, it is difficult to do justice to Matthew Biro's The Dada Cyborg in the space of this review. The tasks he lays out for himself from the outset - conceptualizing the Weimar cyborg, explaining modernism, postmodernism and the historical avant-garde, and providing insightful new interpretations of a wide variety of Berlin Dada photomontage art - are daunting. In the end, Biro pulls it off. He manages to weave these elements into a very readable, expertly argued treatise on art and hybrid identity. He does so in a style that makes his work accessible to readers who are unfamiliar with Berlin Dada, while at the same time offering new arguments that that will enrich the debate among experts in the field on the destructive/constructive nature of Berlin Dada, the reemergence of contextual meanings in avant-garde art, and, of course, the centrality of the newly emerging cyborg to Berlin Dada. Biro begins with a lucid introduction followed by Chapter 1 which offers more introductory-style analysis of the broader context of Berlin Dada. Most helpful in the introduction is Biro's explanation of his broad understanding of the concept of the cyborg. His juxtaposition of Norbert Wiener 's historical conception of the cyborg asa construct of cybernetic theory with Donna Haraway 's socially critical concept of the cyborgas an eliminator of boundaries - human-machine, animal-human, physical-non-physical - arms the reader with one of the necessary tools to make the most of Biro's analysis of Berlin Dada. The other helpful tools Biro provides his readers are the clear explanations of modernism, postmodernism and the historical avant-garde. So armed, the reader is ready to encounter the first chapter on the origins, practices, and institutions of Berlin Dada with a special emphasis on the less-well known media these artists used. Biro employs this section to make the case that these other media subtend the development of the image of the cyborg in their photomontages. It is precisely these photomontages, along with other assemblages, that are the primary focus of the later chapters. Chapter 2 deals with a single montage by Hannah Hoch. Biro essentially uses Hoch's Schnitt mit dem Kuchenmesser Dada durch die letzte Weimarer Bierbauchkulturepoche Deutschlands as a model for how he will approach the other works of art he interprets. …" @default.
