- W1570352436 abstract "At a recent joint ALCTS/RUSA institute (Virtually Yours--Models for Managing Electronic Resources and Services), one of speakers noted that average life span of a Web page was seventy-five days. Currently, a fairly significant amount of labor is being spent in libraries bookmarking sites, adding links to Web pages to library pages, adding URLs to MARC records, or otherwise trying to keep track of useful Web sites for reference. Despite these valiant efforts, one constantly finds dead URLs on even some of outstanding library Web sites that staff are desperately trying to keep current. Keeping track of sites, even with automated URL checkers, has become a very staff-intensive operation if a library attempts to keep its pages up-to-date. Supposedly, we are trying to move from idea of buying lots of reference books just in case someone needs them to accessing information just in time. However, I am beginning to wonder if we are headed to a future where we will be spending an inordinate amount of time trying to keep up with live Web pages that we never actually get to use. Even when we do find useful sites, how likely is it that URL will be active six months later? As a small object lesson in bits versus picas, I offer following example. Recently I worked on a question about the Lady of Lake, a mysterious event in a small Washington town. According to patron, story recently was featured on TV program Unsolved Mysteries. Being a proactive Web searcher who tends to rely on hope and intuition more than multitudinous Web search engines, my first thought was to see if TV program had a Web site. I took a guess and entered www.unsolved.com as a URL. Lo and behold, site was there, but there was no mention of this particular episode. I then resorted to several old-fashioned reference sources --a directory of newsletters (which I still refer to as Ayer's even through Gale took it over years ago) and telephone. A one-minute call to local newspaper found someone who knew story well (which actually took place ten-plus years ago), and person was kind enough to fax several stories to me. I thought briefly about bookmarking Web site and decided that it would be much more helpful to simply add a copy of newspaper information to our hard-to-find file. The lesson to me here is that we cannot afford to become overreliant on electronic information, particularly given its relative impermanence, and neglect need for retaining more permanent hard copy. In other words, archival role of libraries in an electronic age is fast becoming a vital need. Given that caveat, however, I am going to offer a useful site that came across my screen recently: Glenn Kerstein, Suburban Library System (Illinois), has tabulated some anniversary questions (such as, What is name for 125th anniversary?) and put them on a Web site: http://www.sls.lib.il.us/reference/por/ft2-1197.html. Some of most interesting proposed names (not yet approved by lexicographers) are: 175th--terquasquicentennial or septaquintaquinquecentennial 350th--semisseptcentennial 13th--tredecennial Has anyone ever asked you about Green Flash at sunset phenomenon?
