- W1570446441 abstract "Design loads for wind turbines are used to determine the machines' structural durability and operating lifetime. Inherently, these loads also dictate turbine cost and reliability, and therefore are of considerable importance to the turbine designer and manufacturer. As in many industries, wind turbine design loads are dictated by standards that often employ rules of thumb based on previous experience. In conjunction with these loads, safety factors are used that are also based on previous experience more than physical estimates of uncertainty. Because of their basis in experience with previous turbine designs, established rules for estimating design loads and safety factors may limit design innovation and may not allow manufacturers to reduce the structural cost of their turbines by narrowing design margins. Recently, turbine standard committees have begun modifying these standards to accommodate more physics-based standards based on complex simulation rather than on previous experience. Methods such as statistical load extrapolation may allow designers to estimate long-term operating loads without simulating for long periods of time. In turn, these loads may be more accurate than those estimated by previous standards, and the designer may be able to relax safety factors that are currently imposed to account for variability in old methods of estimation. The methods for determining these extrapolated design loads are currently a topic of research, and many questions remain unanswered. What are the best methods to use? What are the uncertainties in estimation? How can these methods of estimation be related to safety factors?
