- W1570483336 abstract "The paper describes an experiment started in Denmark in three small towns, each intersected by a main road. The object is to study the effects on the environment of changes in the design of the road, which make it impossible for drivers to drive at a speed exceeding 50 km/h. The changes in design consist in installing cycle tracks, pedestrian crossings and traffic islands, narrowing the carriageway, introducing a few parking sections, using different surfaces and rumble strips, planting trees and bushes, and installing road signs. A before and after study will be carried out to investigate the effects on: traffic volume (cars, cyclists, pedestrians), vehicle speed, severance effect, accidents, noise, indoor vibrations caused by lorries and buses, air pollution, journey time, demand on drivers' attention, activity in the town, and maintenance costs.
