- W1570542963 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter considers whether neurodevelopmental disturbances in children can be programmed in utero via exposure to maternal obesity. If the association is causal, the prenatal period represents a critical window of opportunity for prevention. Therefore, understanding possible mechanisms that may account for this association need to be evaluated and are the focus of this chapter. Fetal brain development is dependent on maternal energy supply. Until recently, researchers have concentrated exclusively on low maternal weight before or during pregnancy as a risk factor for child neurobehavioral disturbance, particularly as mediated via low birth weight. For example, several studies have found an association between schizophrenia in adult offspring of women who were exposed to famine during pregnancy. Significant associations have been found for women who had inadequate weight gain during pregnancy or for women who conceived during the peak of famine and thus had a greater likelihood of having lower prepregnancy body mass index (BMI). However, it is difficult to disentangle the effect of maternal weight from the potential effect of stress when using historical epidemiological methods." @default.
