- W1570548064 abstract "You have accessThe ASHA LeaderInbox1 Mar 2010Unbiased Service for Clients Pamela Ouellette Pamela Ouellette Google Scholar More articles by this author https://doi.org/10.1044/leader.IN4.15032010.38 SectionsAbout ToolsAdd to favorites ShareFacebookTwitterLinked In I am writing in response to the letter from Mary Estlack expressing her “increasing concerns regarding the multicultural constituency groups, more specifically, the L’GASP-GLBT caucus” and her concern that a portion of ASHA dues is being used to support the “social platform of those engaged in a homosexual lifestyle and its promotion.” As a dues-paying member of ASHA, I am both saddened by Ms. Estlack’s views and disappointed by the response—or lack of a response—of the editor. By not responding to Ms. Estlack’s letter, The ASHA Leader neglected an important opportunity to educate the membership about the need for the multicultural constituency groups and the importance of their missions, which is to address the needs of students, professionals, and clients who have historically been discriminated against on the basis of race, ethnicity, and/or sexual orientation. An appropriate response would have noted that, as professional speech-language pathologists, it is not our place to judge or label our clients’ “lifestyles” as “immoral,” and making such a judgment certainly stands as a barrier to building effective professional relationships with our clients and their families. In the future, when confronted with bigoted viewpoints by fellow SLPs and ASHA members, I hope that The ASHA Leader supports the related professional organizations’ efforts to make communication a human right for all—no matter their color, culture, religion, or sexual orientation as per ASHA’s vision.
