- W1570782860 abstract "The stratified squamous epithelia of the esophagus and stomach were investigated with the electron microscope in mice. Langerhans cells (LC) were observed within the epithelia of both organs. In specimens which had been fixed with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide, the morphology of these cells corresponds completely to the morphology of epidermal LC. This finding is discussed with respect to the possible mesenchymal nature of LC. The occurrence of LC within stratified squamous epithelia of endodermal origin gives further evidence for this assumption. The morphology of LC in the epithelia of the esophagus and stomach after fixation with the osmium-zinc-iodide mixture is also reported. In light microscopic examinations this method was found to permit a distinct staining of LC. At the level of the electron microscope the cytoplasm of LC was completely filled with metallic deposits. Therefore the identification of cytological details is more difficult. A selective staining of the specific Langerhans granules (Ebner and Niebauer, 1970) was not observed." @default.
