Processing studies have shown that the Ni-Al precursor type can have a considerable effect on the densification behavior and final mechanical properties. Several different metal powder combinations were examined that would react to produce Ni 3 Al. These included: NiAl + Ni; Al-30 Ni + Ni; Ni+Al+NiAl + Ni; and Ni + Al. Sintering behavior was acceptable for all types except when elemental Al was used. Those particular samples exhibited macroscopic cracking due to differential heating and shrinkage resulting from the highly exothermic reaction between the Ni and Al. While the other samples densifi well, only the composites made from the NiAl + Ni combination had mechanical properties that were acceptable." @default.
