- W1570836469 abstract "he was inspired by his family relation¬ ship with Paul Kruger who looms so large in the history of South Africa, but because he could find no concise and unbiased account of the Boer War which could satisfy his curiosity. This book, the result of his studies and investigations, is a very able, well-or¬ ganized, and clearly presented discourse. It achieves a high degree of nonpartisanship as far as one can judge, seeing the things opaquely from a great distance. The British Army and Navy had colonized vast areas of the world's territory against native populations during the hundred years preceding the Boer War. Many of the natives were brave but not well organized or sup¬ plied. In the Boer War, the British for the first time had a long and substantial war against an enemy of their own degree of sophistication in warfare, in transport, and in the capacity to endure chronic hardships. Boers and British could engage in ferocious combat and slug things out toe to toe. The Boer War shattered the prestige of Victorian Britain as it approached the Ed¬ wardian period. The vast complacency of Vic¬ toria's reign, characterized as it had been by an unending succession of triumphal marches, ended in consternation. There are brilliantly executed and memorable character sketches of the leading characters political and mili¬ tary, on both sides. We find the heroic Boer generals De la Rey and De Wet lined up against Roberts, Kitchener, Baden-Powell, and others. Here Jan Smuts makes his heroic entry on the pages of history. This is the remarkable story of a war of movement by rail, horse, or ox-drawn wagons, of small groups, of guerrilla campaigns, of the vast problem of fetching supplies from Britain to South Africa and then overland along the railroads and by wagon. One sees pathetically displayed side-by-side extraordinary heroism, bravery, and indeed generosity of spirit against sickening incompetence, blundering, bureaucratic red tape, and so many errors which appear brilliantly clear and easy to the post hoc view of aftersight. They must have been quite different as they were evolving minute by minute and day by day. Those who wish to learn something of South African history, well organized, digested, and pre¬ sented, can get a gleam of clear light on a very obscure portion of history in this book by Rayne Kruger with the unlikely title Good-Bye Dolly Gray. It is an exciting his¬ tory, brilliantly organized and elegantly written, and pervaded with insights and a sense of fairness which mark it as on out¬ standing book. William B. Bean, M.D." @default.
