• W157114672 abstract "This article reports on a pilot project investigating what motivates and guides information studies scholars' choice of research topics and methodologies by exploring the patterns of personal idiosyncrasies that influence individual researchers. Preliminary data collection comprised a selection of participants through publication analysis followed by semi-structured interviews. Findings showed similar themes in the research agendas of participants interviewed despite particular topics and methods used. Commonalities included goals of social and/or practical relevance, and personal and professional history, both alone and in combination. Our research suggests that the non-Ph.D. granting schools have more of a practitioner bent as regards their writing and publication, whereas those that grant the Ph.D. are encouraged to publish in more scholarly venues. However, the shared interest among our participants in doing work that has practical and/or social significance may belie the common conceptions that those doing research in academe have little regard for the needs of information professionals." @default.
