The chickenpox virus can involve organs and tissues throughout the body, and severe involvement of the lungs results in an appreciable mortality rate.Waring et al.1first reported two cases of primary chickenpox pneumonia in 1942, including autopsy findings in one fatal case. They described the pathologic findings and the intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies characteristic of the chickenpox virus.
