- W157215532 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the islands of Hawaii as the tallest of which rise 8-9 km above the floor of the deep ocean, are formed of overlapping volcanoes constructed during the last several million years. Of the many volcanoes comprising the islands, only Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii, has an unequivocal record of multiple glaciations. Haleakala volcano on Maui likely was glaciated repeatedly during the Middle Pleistocene. Mauna Loa, Hawaii's second-highest summit, had a small ice cap during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), but if so, the record of it is buffed beneath Holocene lava that mantles the upper slopes. The extent of the last ice cap on Mauna Kea (4206 m) is marked by a discontinuous terminal moraine or moraine complex and upper limits of erratic boulders on cinder cones that lie within the glacial limit. It also discusses the upslope from the outer moraines, striated bedrock surfaces are interspersed with loose bouldery drift, but no younger moraines are found, implying rapid deglaciation following the full-glacial advance without late-glacial halts or readvances." @default.
