- W1572201019 abstract "Dwarf galaxies are now widely acknowledged to be the building blocks of to-day’s massive galaxies. In a sense, today’s dwarf galaxies can be considered to be the survivors of an initially much richer galaxy population — in the local universe, dwarf galaxies remain the most numerous type of galaxies. With metallicities of around one-tenth solar, dwarf galaxies are believed to be the closest counterparts to the early star-forming fragments. In-depth studies of nearby dwarf galaxies are therefore key to understanding the conditions in and evolution of galaxies in the early universe. Studies focusing on the molecular gas phase of the ISM of these low-metallicity objects are particularly important since it is the molecular gas out of which stars form." @default.
