- W1573128703 abstract "Since the introduction of computers for commercial use in the early 1950's, a considerable amount of technology has emerged from the application of computers to data processing problems. In spite of this considerable activity, there does not exist a very substantial or definitive literature on data processing technology. The past several years have seen an increasing interest in data processing theory. The apparent lack of success in developing a truly machine-independent programming language is held by some to indicate a basic ignorance of the knowledge of data processing. Others conclude that standardization, either in computers or computer languages, will be impossible until suitable theoretical foundations have been established. A small number of investigators are now working to provide such a foundation. A theory as such has not yet emerged, but some significant achievements have been made in providing the tools upon which a theory may be based. The chapter discusses the developments of the past several years in the areas alluded to above such as, procedural programming languages, nonprocedural programming languages, and data organization and description methods . To provide an adequate appreciation of these developments, some are described in considerable detail. The chapter also discusses the various developments in data processing theory." @default.
