- W1574162364 abstract "Since mediation is an alternative form of conflict resolution, which is increasingly employed at schools, the thesis is primarily focused on the mediation process at the Recica ob Savinji elementary school. One key precondition for successful implementation and development of such programs at schools are thorough evaluation of school mediation programs and research on performance and effects thereof. School and peer mediation programs have mushroomed across the world in recent years; however, research and evaluation of such programs remain scarce, and this applies to Slovenia as well. Therefore, it is the main purpose of the thesis to evaluate which theoretical starting points and recommendations are observed by teachers who are school mediators and students who are peer mediators; how the knowledge they have acquired is manifest in the context of the school; and how the school/peer mediation program affects the general climate at the school. The thesis looks to evaluate the success of implementation and progress of peer mediation at the Recica of Savinji elementary school and to determine whether the introduction of peer mediation, which can be a comprehensive school program that helps the educators to teach the students fundamental communication skills and which improves the school climate, has gone beyond mere help in resolving disputes between individuals. Qualitative methodology of case study is employed to analyze nine partially structured interviews with teachers/school mediators, students/peer mediators, and parents of students/peer mediators. According to the results of the analysis, mediation at the Recica ob Savinji elementary school has brought about a number of positive results: both teachers and students involved in the mediation programs have learned the techniques of non-violent communication; they have improved their constructive conflict resolution skills; they have started to transfer the knowledge they have acquired beyond the context of the school; school climate has improved; and personal relationships have improved. Moreover, research has shown that more time and effort should be invested to extend the mediation program as widely as possible to include all teachers and students and to thus increase the probability of long-term existence and development of mediation at the school where the study took place. The thesis also offers important insight by identifying the shortcomings of the mediation program at the school at hand, especially the lack of monitoring and program evaluation, and inadequate propagation of mediation to as many users at the school, which would allow the school to include all students into the program more comprehensively, regardless of the development level of their social skills and their school performance. This poses additional challenges in conducting mediation and in further research of the area." @default.
