• W1574223079 abstract "Publisher Summary The chapter presents an analysis of stimulus class formation in animals. A stimulus class can be broadly defined to include any case in which a common response is made to a set of discriminably different stimuli. The different classes discussed in the chapter are similarity-based classes and nonsimilarity-based classes. Similarity-based classes form automatically and depend on either confusion between the training and test stimuli or judged commonality of stimulus elements. The defining characteristic of nonsimilarity-based classes is that there is an imperfect correlation between the similarity of the test stimuli to the training stimuli and the strength of the response. Although the study of similarity-based classes has played an important role in the assessment of stimulus control, with the increased interest in the conceptual abilities of animals, the focus has shifted to the study of nonsimilarity-based classes. This chapter classifies the research on nonsimilarity-based classes according to the characteristics of the class members (predisposed classes, classes of natural stimuli, and arbitrary stimulus classes) and according to the method used to establish the class (e.g., many-to-one matching). Whether equivalence classes are, in fact, psychologically different from other functional classes is not clear and remains to be determined. Considerable progress in the study of stimulus class formation by animals has come from the integration of approaches developed in three disparate research areas: (1) animal behavior, (2) human cognition, and (3) traditional learning." @default.
