- W1574302964 abstract "TRANSSEXUALISM IS A highly disabling condition in which people experience persistent distress about their anatomical sex and a strong desire to change to the opposite sex.1 In 1999, the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil, established a multidisciplinary program for the care of transsexual participants based on clinical support via a multidisciplinary team that provides physical and psychological help, hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery (SRS).1 SRS has been appointed as a factor of improvement in patient social acceptance and body/gender identity concordance is considered responsible for the success of treating transsexualism.2 Between 1999 and 2009, 243 people were enrolled in this program, 82 of whom underwent SRS. Our group previously described a minimum of 12-month follow up of 18 male-to-female transsexuals who underwent SRS between 2000 and 2004 with regard to their satisfaction with sexual experiences, partnerships, and family member relationships using a research protocol composed of multiple-choice and open-ended questions.3 The aim of this letter is to expand upon our initial findings by describing a minimum 24-month follow up of 52 male-to-female transsexuals after SRS. There were 69 participants with a minimum 2-year follow up. Fifty-two patients were contacted and agreed to participate in this study (75.40%). Seventeen participants (24.60%) were lost to follow up. All participants provided written informed consent. Data are presented as the means ± standard deviations or percentages. The time of the follow up was 3.8 ± 1.7 (range 2–7) years. Age at follow up was 36.28 ± 8.94 (range 18–58) years. No participant in the study reported regretting SRS. Forty-six participants (88.46%) considered sex as pleasurable via the neovagina and reported improvement in the quality of their sexual experiences after SRS. Forty-four participants (84.61%) reported that the quality of sexual intercourse was satisfactory to excellent, five participants (9.61%) rated it as average, one (1.92%) rated it as unsatisfactory, and two participants (3.84%) reported that they were not having sex. Thirty-five participants (67.30%) reported that the frequency of sexual intercourse increased after SRS (χ2, P = 0.032). Forty-one participants (78.84%) reported that initiating and maintaining a relationship had become easier, and 11 (21.16%) reported no change in this regard. The number of subjects with a romantic partner increased from 27 (51.93%) to 34 (65.38%) after SRS (χ2, P = 0.019). Twenty-nine participants (56.77%) reported an improvement in family relationships, whereas 23 participants (44.23%) did not report a difference. No participant reported deterioration in family relationships after SRS. The current results confirm and extend our previous findings as well as support the notion that SRS has a positive effect on Brazilian male-to-female transsexuals with regard to sexual, romantic, and family relationships. The improvements in family relationships and partnerships might be related to the social adaptation of transsexual participants." @default.
