- W1575902110 abstract "Heterosis is defined as the difference between the F 1 -performance and the mean of the homozygous pa- rental lines (midparent heterosis MPH). Grass breeders though, are working with non-inbred materials. Crossing two populations results in a hybrid population showing superiority when compared with the midparent value. This heterotic increase is termed panmictic midparent heterosis (PMPH). Multiplying the hybrid population, PMPH in the F 2 -(SYN-2)-generation is reduced by 50%, and only this part can be exploited on open pollinated varieties. In a second part, published data from several grass species will be reviewed. Thirdly, the concept of heterotic groups will be discussed, based on experimental results from diallel crosses. In a last part, breeding schemes to maximize heterosis in grass varieties will be outlined and discussed." @default.
