- W1576745612 abstract "Carbohydrates are the most abundant and diverse family of natural products, universally expressed as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Several positions on a monosaccharide can be linked to biomolecules such as other saccharides, proteins, or lipids through α or β stereochemistry. This allows for arrays with diversity unlike any other biological molecules, making them ideal as recognition and adhesion factors. Therefore, carbohydrates expressed on cellular surfaces are frequently used to differentiate between cell types and states of maturation in individual cell lines. Because individual cell types can have distinct oligosaccharide makeup, carbohydrate targets have also found applications as pharmaceuticals.Structural variability also makes them ideal for mediation of protein stability, transport, and folding, as well as cellular storage and stabilization. To increase understanding of this diverse class and their pharmaceutical applications, screening methods to facilitate analysis are critical. One significant issue associated with the screening process is determination of an effective method for displaying saccharides in biological assays that allows for rapid and facile analysis of the interaction. Methods of attachment for saccharides to microtiter plates through noncovalent interaction between a lipid tether on the saccharide and the polystyrene well surface are presented in this chapter, as well as a brief summary of work being performed on saccharides displayed in this manner." @default.
