- W1576752436 abstract "In a living cell the number of molecules that can interact is usually so small that molecular noise, i.e., collisions and thermal motion, should explicitly be taken into account if one wishes to understand the internal logic of molecular processes that take place in simple living systems. Moreover how is it possible to explain that, within the cell, the elementary processes are subjected to molecular noise whereas the biological functions that rely upon these processes appear strictly deterministic and devoid of any noise? The aim of this chapter is an attempt at answering these questions. The physics of intracellular noise is briefly discussed first, in particular the random walk of a molecule, the principle of detailed balance, Langevin and Fokker–Planck equations. Then is presented a model that allows one to understand, on a rather intuitive basis, how molecular noise may drive periodic oscillations in a model of genetic network." @default.
