- W1576867558 abstract "Religion and Change in Modern Britain. Edited by Linda Woodhead and Rebecca Catto. (London and New York: Roudedge, 2012, Pp. xvi, 408. $49.95, paper.)The popular perception of religion in post-Second World War Britain is one of Christianity relinquishing its power and influence to an increasing secularization, and of an established church that once seemed to be the spiritual embodiment of the nation declining into an institution increasingly marginalized and irrelevant to the lives of most Britons. Religion and Change in Modem Britain paints a more complex picture, however. Editors Linda Woodhead and Rebecca Catto have commissioned a fascinating set of essays that explore the shift in Britain from a Christian nation to a society that is both multi-faith and secular. The idea that the history of British religion could be told a simple evolutionary tale (3) from religiosity to secularization is anathema to the contributors, whose collaborative readings and discussions assured a systematic continuity of theme. An additional strength of this volume is that its essays do not consider religion in isolation but in relation to the many changes in British politics, economics, and society. Indeed, Woodhead and her contributors are critical of the assumption that religion has become in Britain a largely personal affair, absent from public life. Instead of exploring religion as sets of discrete systems and practices, these essays explore how religion is integral in British politics, media, the economy, and so forth. Individual chapters explore first the change in the outer religious face of Britain, such as the decline of Christian hegemony, the rise of Asian and Middle Eastern faiths, and the growth of alternative spiritualities. A second set of chapters discusses the wider influences that cross individual religious boundaries, including the roles of the media, welfare and education, and politics and the law. A final, theoretical section explores cultural, social and secular perspectives on religion. The volume begins with a comprehensive overview of the evolving state of religion in Britain since 1945. In her masterful introduction, Woodhead traces the changes in the primary influences on British religion following World War Two, showing that the state would eventually be supplanted by the market. The most vital cause of this shift was the development of the welfare state, which, according to Woodhead, became a focus of unity and national hope in Britain, and an object of faith in its own right (1). Stimulated by national pride, the progressive and utopian welfare ideal was in essence a civil religion: Hope and faith were invested, and a New Jerusalem was to be built in Britain's green and pleasant land (10). …" @default.
