- W1577704671 abstract "The sociology of knowledge originally treated the sciences as immune to social analysis, but from the 1970s, the very content of scientific knowledge has been treated as a social product—at least in part. Thinking in sociology of knowledge terms, this transformation could be seen as belonging to the revolution of ideas that took place in the West in the affluent 1960s, but the origins of the thought that informed the new movement goes back further. Sociology of scientific knowledge introduced new concepts such as the need to treat true and false ideas symmetrically in terms of social analysis. Once truth was no longer taken to determine belief it became possible to explore the way scientific beliefs were actually formed. Experimental findings were shown to be ‘interpretatively flexible’ and less determining than had been thought. Scientific disputes reached ‘closure’ only through a variety of means beyond theory and experiment. Trust and personal judgement turned out to have central roles in the production of scientific knowledge. Different approaches to sociology of scientific knowledge have widely differing political and philosophical consequences, philosophical radicalism not always coinciding with political significance." @default.
