- W1577952261 abstract "The authors explain why the uncertain future of the second least populous state, the least understood state, is important to all Americans. They point out that Alaska has the greatest deposits of oil, coal, and other minerals in the nation; the most abundant and varied wildlife and the most expansive wilderness in the nation; three-fifths of the nation's coastline and one-fifth of the lower 48's land mass; the greatest fish resources in the nation; the world's most expensive--and one of the most wasteful--engineering projects: the trans-Alaska oil pipeline; the prime hunting grounds for Japanese companies and huge multinational corporations; the most powerful local labor boss whose Teamsters have a near-stranglehold on the state; and the most economically and politically potent minority group--the 60,000 natives--in the nation. The vestiges of Alaska are being swallowed up by forces set in motion with the bonanza discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in 1968, according to the authors. Since that discovery, they state that the multinational energy giants have swarmed into Alaska to try to tap the vast and heretofore largely inaccessible deposits of oil, natural gas, coal, uranium, copper, and almost three dozen other minerals. The value of the prize is almost inestimable, more » and the costs are staggering. Alaska will have more impact on the lives of Americans over the next half-century than will any other state, the authors conclude. (MCW) « less" @default.
