- W1580034976 abstract "Auxiliary lanes on two lane roads perform two important functions: (a) overcoming delays caused by slow vehicles on grades, and (b) breaking up bunches caused by inadequate overtaking opportunities over an extended length of road. While the first function has been recognised for many years, the use of auxiliary lanes for overtaking purposes is a relatively new development. This report presents a comprehensive review of overtaking lane design practice in Canada and Australia. It is based on a survey of provincial and state road authorities in both countries, using a common set of definitions and terminology. While Australian road authorities have developed a fairly uniform and nationally accepted set of design guidelines and warrants, Canadian practice is characterised by individual approaches followed by each provincial highway department. Warrants for overtaking lanes are still under development and vary from area to area; nevertheless a number of common factors are beginning to emerge. For example the need for advance notification of an overtaking lane, the requirement to keep to the outside lane unless overtaking, and advance warning of the merge are all examples of common denominators in Canadian and Australian design practice. There is less agreement, however, on overtaking lane lengths, spacings and configurations, and appropriate barrier lining practice at various traffic volumes. With regard to length, there is general agreement that short overtaking lanes are most cost effective, but Australian recommended lengths are shorter than those in Canada. The question of whether or not to allow overtaking from the opposing lane can involve a trade off of operational and safety benefits. While most authorities allow overtaking in the opposing lane at low volumes, there is some uncertainty about the safety of these manoeuvres on high volume roads. All agencies reported a good operational experience with overtaking lanes and indicated that two lane highways with overtaking lanes were providing an intermediate quality of service between two lane and four lane rural roads (a)." @default.
