A partir de valeurs de biomasse dans des carreaux de 4 km X 4 km et de valeurs de concentration en contaminants a 17 stations dans le lac, la technique du krigeage a permis d'estimer a 36 kg de Cd, 98 kg de Cr, 557 kg de Cu, 314 kg de Ni, 69 kg de Pb et a 2,580 kg de Zn les quantites retenues dans les parties vertes des plantes submergees. Pour un instant donne, les quantites retrouvees dans les plantes etaient superieures a celles dissoutes dans la colonne d'eau pour le Cd, le Pb et le Zn, mais nettement inferieures a celles dans les sediments mobiles. Pendant la periode estivale, le compartiment retiendrait <1% du Ni et du Cu dissous dans l'eau qui passe dans le lac pendant l'ete, 2,2% du Zn, 2,5% du Cd et 4,1% du Pb. La perte en biomasse observee au mois d'octobre et la derive des debris de plantes suggerent que les metaux associes aux parties vertes des plantes submergees sortent du lac a la fin de l'ete. Les macrophytes submerges du lac Saint-Pierre, particulierement la vallisnerie americaine, montrent leur utilite en tant que bio-indicateurs de metaux traces, en refletant la contamination du milieu et la partie biodisponible des metaux potentiellement transmissible dans la chaine alimentaire.The objectives of this project were to evaluate the biomass of Lake st-pierre submerged aquatic plants, both at the peak of the seasonal biomass and during the senescence period, and to estimate the total content of trace metals contained in the above-ground portion of the vegetation. The biomass of the submerged aquatic plants was determined at 27-40 stations in August and October 1990; multispectral remote sensing data (MEIS-II) were used to extrapolate from these point biomass estimates (gjm2) to the entire lake area (Lavoie et al., 1991). Samples of the aquatic plant community (dominated by Vallisneria americana and Potamogeton sp.) were also collected for metal analysis at 17 stations (Cd,Cr,cu,Fe,Mn,Ni,Pb,Zn). By combining the two data bases (biomass; metal concentrations), using appropriate geostatistical techniques (kridging), we have estimated the seasonal storage of metals in Lake st-pierre plants: 36 kg Cd, 98 kg Cr, 557 kg Cu, 314 kg Ni, 69 kg Pb and 2,580 kg Zn. At any given time during the seasonal biomass peak, the quantities of Cd, Pb and Zn stored in the plants were higher than those dissolved in the water column, but much lower than those present in the mobile sediments. Mass balance calculations for the summer months (120 d) indicate that the compartment would retain <1% of the Ni and Cu entering the lakei calculated retentions are slightly higher for Zn (2,2%), Cd (2,5%) and Pb (4,1%). The loss of biomass and the downstream drifting of plant material noted in October suggest that the metals associated with the above-ground parts of the submerged vegetation are not recycled within the lake, but are exported at the end of the summer. Submerged macrophytes of Lake st-Pierre, particularly Vallisneria americana (wild celery), show potential as bioindicators of trace metals, reflecting spatial variations in environmental contamination; metals present in the macrophyte biomass are potentially transferable through the food chain to higher organisms." @default.
