- W1580627420 abstract "Four different striated muscles were studied by freeze-fracturing with particular emphasis on transverse (T) tubules, sarcotubules (SR), and the couplings formed between these two organelle systems. Muscles selected were cardiac and psoas muscles of the guinea pig, breast muscle of the hen, and sartorius muscle of the toad. Counts were made of the membrane particles on the A and B faces of the sarcotubules. In all cases the A faces carried abundant particles whereas the B faces carried much fewer: ratios (A:B) were approximately 3:1 (cardiac muscle), and 6:1 (skeletal muscle). Particle distributions for the A faces were approximately 1000 per μm2 (cardiac muscle) and 2000 per μm2 (skeletal muscles). At coupling regions there is a specialization within the gap between the SR and T tubule membranes. In cardiac muscle this is seen as an aggregation of small particles filling this gap; in skeletal muscles, especially psoas muscle, this gap is traversed by a double row of 30 nm “bridging particles” linking the two membranes and providing a possible pathway for excitation—concentration coupling." @default.
