- W1580931552 abstract "1.1. The literature on injuries to the spine has been reviewed with especial reference to morbidity and mortality statistics both in military and civil practice. 2.2. The pathologic physiology occurring in the spinal cord and in the urinary tract is described briefly. 3.3. Infection of the urinary tract is found to be the most important cause of death in these injuries. Catheterization of the bladder is accepted as the cause for infection in the opinion of almost all commentators. 4.4. The management of the urologic complications has been outlined, stress being laid upon the absolute necessity for the avoidance of catheterization. We are aware that some cases are not infected by catheterization, but we feel that this is a matter of luck rather than sound judgment. We feel that twenty years of clinical experience justifies our views on this subject. 5.5. An analysis is made of 54 cases treated in Harlem Hospital without a single infection in the urinary tract." @default.
