- W158130351 abstract "Police and Fire Department Radio Signals required to implement radio coverage within Segment 2 of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Red Line Subway system are being received off the air and are rebroadcasted in subway tunnels and stations below ground using On-Frequency Radio Repeaters. This approach has eliminated the need for voice and control channels over land line facilities that would be necessary if conventional radio base stations were employed. Land line systems used to relay voice signals between radio equipment in the underground transit stations to their Fire/Police Dispatch Centers have bandwidth restrictions that limit audio transmission between 300-3,000 Hertz. This limitation makes it difficult to faithfully reproduce the subaudible band (below 300 Hertz) tones utilized in Continuous Tone Coded Squelch Systems (CTCSS) used in today's radio systems, and impossible to reproduce tones with phase shifts that will be employed in future digital radio networks. These and future difficulties (with digital radios) have been bypassing using On-Frequency radio Repeaters in MTA Segment 2, and plans are in the making to retrofit Segment 1 with the same technology. Frequency stability problems become evident at underground station entrances, where the radio signals being broadcast underground overlap with radio signals broadcast aboveground. Unless frequencies are locked down precisely, beat tones, which interfere with reception, are generated. The On-Frequency Radio Repeater design used in the MTA system eliminates beat tone concerns. This paper addresses these and other technical issues in easy to understand terms, delves briefly into the proposed APCO 25 Standard for digital radio transmission which Fire and Police Agencies nation wide are planning to implement, and describe how the On-Frequency Repeaters can make equipment and interfaces between transit agencies and Fire/Police agencies easier to implement." @default.
