- W1581666953 abstract "There Goes the 'Hood: Views of Gentrification from the Ground Up, Lance Freeman, Philadelphia, Temple University Press, 2006, 235 pp., $25.95 (p/b) There Goes the 'Hood represents an important addition to the gentrification literature. Up to now most studies of the subject have either measured the level of gentrification or the incidence of gentrification-induced displacement, or looked at gentrification from the prism of class conflict. What has been missing, with the exception of David Maurrasse's Listening to Harlem: Gentrification, Community, and Business (New York: Routledge, 2006), is a sophisticated analysis of the impact of gentrification on indigenous low-income minority residents. There Goes the 'Hood goes a long way towards closing this gap. Freeman's nuanced discussion of gentrification represents a significant improvement over the overly simplistic discussions to be found in popular scholarly literature. Prior to the publication of There Goes the 'Hood, Freeman was best known for his sophisticated empirical research on housing and residential mobility. In a 2004 article in the Journal of the American Planning Association, Freeman, using regression analysis and a longitudinal survey of renters, showed that poor residents in gentrifying neighbourhoods were significantly less likely to move than poor households in non-gentrifying neighbourhoods. Apparently Lance Freeman is just as adept at qualitative research. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used to identify and interview in depth 51 residents of Harlem and the Cobble Hill community of Brooklyn. Using verbatim quotes from these interviews and his own experiences of living on the edge of Harlem, Freeman has produced a highly readable and informative book that should prove useful to scholars and policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic. Freeman shows that disadvantaged residents are just as appreciative of improvements as affluent residents, e.g. improved shopping, physical and aesthetic improvements, higher property values (which benefit long-time home-owners), improved public services and a reduction in crime. Furthermore, gentrification in communities such as Harlem allows the expanding black middle class the opportunity to benefit from urban amenities including historic architecture. Nevertheless, many black residents still view gentrification negatively. Some perceive improvements as a 'slap in the face' because they reflect so-called 'white privilege'. Others complain that newcomers are not committed to the community on a social level or believe that cosmetic improvements don't address social problems. …" @default.
