- W1582692 abstract "The growth, degeneration, and regeneration of sympathetic nerves in a variety of experimental situations is discussed. In both normal development of smooth muscle and in anterior eye chamber transplants, varicose adrenergic nerves exhibiting characteristic fluorescence and ultrastructure invade the muscle early although functional transmission may not occur until a few days later. The density of innervation reached in transplants of a particular tissue is comparable to that seen in situ, and continues to increase in both situations up to at least 6 months. Only nerves of the type previously supplying the tissue reinnervate transplants. In tissue culture, sympathetic nerves grow preferentially over distances of up to 2 mm towards explants of normally densely innervated tissues (vas deferens and atrium) in competition with explants of normally sparsely innervated tissues (uterus, ureter, lung, kidney). It is suggested that NGF produced by the explants is the chemical involved in this “attraction” process. No “attraction” from a distance of sympathetic nerves to single smooth or cardiac muscle cells occurs, but random contact leads to close, extensive, and long-lasting associations; in contrast, contact with fibroblasts is always transitory. Questions have been posed regarding the membrane “recognition” mechanism. Finally, the retraction of sympathetic nerves induced by guanethidine is described for both in situ and in vitro situations." @default.
