- W1582712193 abstract "Kimberley rock art. Volume one: Mitchell Plateau area, by MIKE DONALDSON. 2012. Wildrocks Publications, Mount Lawley, Western Australia, profusely illustrated throughout with more than 600 colour plates, 528 pages, 28 × 28 cm, 3.34 kg, bibliography, $A145.00 plus postage $A20.00 in Australia, hardcover, ISBN 987-0-9805890-2-3.With this first volume of a trilogy presenting one of the most splendid rock art concentrations of the world, Dr Mike Donaldson has staked his claim to producing one of the largest publications in rock art. It will rival Harald Pager's posthumous production compiled by Tilman Lenssen-Erz, about the Brandberg rock art of Namibia. Donaldson hopes to have his Volumes 2 and 3 out before the end of 2012. There can be no doubt that his heavyweight rock art publishing feat will be very hard act to follow. In Australia, certainly, his production output is likely to remain unsurpassed for years to come. Weighing in at 3.34 kg, Volume 1 focuses on the Mitchell Plateau, but includes the adjacent rock art bodies on the Lawley River and at Port Warrender, Mudge Bay and Bigge Island. Volume 2 will present the rock art of the Balanggarra people, and Volume 3 that of the Worora people. Donaldson has secured the approval and collaboration of the relevant Indigenous bodies in a way rarely seen in previous work on Kimberley rock art, and for that alone needs to be commended. As in his previous tome, on the Dampier Archipelago petroglyphs (RAR 28: 133-134), Donaldson presents only short texts, wisely letting his sensitive photography of both the art and the scenery convey the fullest impact of this exquisite treasure trove that is Kimberley rock art. The landscape images sprinkled liberally throughout the book not only help the reader, or rather the viewer, to appreciate the land's stark but exquisite splendour, they also convey his deep love of this rugged terrain that he traversed so many times for the past twenty years. After forewords by the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation and Ian Crawford, he begins the text with a brief introduction and then defines the region's geology concisely but comprehensively. As he is a geologist this is not surprising, but it cannot be said often enough that understanding of the rocks is prerequisite to an understanding of the way the rock art presents itself. Donaldson, very correctly, points out that it is the geology that has made the Kimberley one of the richest rock art provinces in the world. The same applies to the remaining parts of Gondwanaland, except, for obvious reasons, to Antarctica.Next, he surveys the history of the exploration of this magnificent corpus, beginning with George Grey in 1838. This is by far the longest section of the text, a comprehensively researched and very balanced review up to the present time. Of particular interest are his comparisons of early recordings, made by Grey, Bradshaw (1891), Brockman (1901), Elkin, the Frobenius expedition and others, with the present-day condition of the rock art recorded earlier. Two factors emerge from the contrasts he illustrates: first, modifications or additions to the paintings can be observed, but seem to have not occurred after 1938; second, the changes in the state of preservation over a period of little over a century are so extensive that their long-term survival, over, say, a millennium, is in many cases not a realistic expectation. Since it is amply clear from many of Donaldson's photographs that a significant portion of the paintings has very limited protection from the elements, it is clear that taphonomy has a massive impact on the rock paintings - much greater than many researchers realise. If we add to this the fact that most sandstone rockshelters are subject to both granular and mass exfoliation, leading to gradual surface retreat, it becomes obvious that the notions of some of this art being tens of millennia old have little credence.Donaldson's review of the history of research in the Kimberley includes the work of current researchers, such as Joc Schmiechen and David Welch. …" @default.
