We take a cross-institutional, analytical, and synthetic approach to extract useful lessons about organizational strategies that support the success of women scholars in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The study uses a mixed-methods approach and draws upon conceptual frameworks addressing organizational change. Our sample is 19 institutions that received ADVANCE IT awards in Rounds 1 and 2 of grants (2001–2004), and carried out their projects over five to eight years. Using Bolman and Deal's [1991] framework, we examine strategic interventions through the structural, human resource, political, and symbolic perspectives. We highlight an approach for identifying and categorizing institutional change interventions and provide examples of change strategies common within our sample. We hope this approach will guide those seeking to enhance women's success in the academy. By viewing their choices as strategic and context-dependent, leaders can more wisely select and combine interventions to craft a systemic change portfolio.
