- W158375866 abstract "The study of human blood vessels presents some problems that are not usually encountered in animal studies. For example, the human life-span is many times longer than that of laboratory animals. Blood vessels of humans undergo many age-related changes. These changes may not reflect the preprogrammed result of agingper sebut may represent diseases that require the passage of time for their induction or expression. Such considerations are especially important now that endothelium-dependent dilation and endothelium-dependent constriction have been demonstrated in cerebral blood vessels.1-3We have shown that endothelium-dependent responses may be impaired by lesions that cannot be appreciated by or that are barely discernible by conventional electron microscopy.24Consequently, whenever a disease is present that may injure the endothelium, one must worry that the disease produced abnormal responses to a variety of vasoactive stimuli. Atherosclerosis and/or hypercholesterolemia represent common human diseases that may produce endothelial injury and consequently aberrant vasomotor responses.’ Hypertension is also common and may produce abnormal responses to a given agonist, perhaps by inducing prostaglandin formation, whose vasomotor consequences overcome the effects of endothelium-derived relaxing factor released by the same agonist.6" @default.
