- W1583973172 abstract "Historically, the culture views of obesity in African American women have been different than Caucasian women. African American women have been more acceptance of obesity. The prevalence of obesity is highest among African American women than other ethnic groups. Obesity augment the probability of many health conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancers (e.g., endometrial, breast, and colon cancer), high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, reproductive health complications (e.g., infertility), and mental health conditions. African American women are less likely to participate in weight loss program and to be successful in weight loss. The author proposed a model for conceptualizing culture specific weight management programs for African American women. This systematic review of the literature evaluates existing research regarding their success and challenges in weight management programs. Essential factors in designing weight managements programs for African American women consist of (a) cultural background, (b) genetic factors in terms of familial tendency, (c) socioeconomic status which race and social case, income, and education, (d) physical activities, (e) nutrition and healthy foods preparation, (f) environmental factors, and (g) and psychosocial factors. All these factors interplay in the individual’s development for overweight and obesity. Recommendations for developing cultural specific weight management programs for African Americans are addressed. However, limited interventions for improving their psychosocial problems are not incorporated but needed in developing weight management programs for African American women.
