- W158447595 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses issues in the evaluation of rehabilitation effects. Rehabilitation after head injury is expensive in terms of time, energy, and monetary resources. The cost has increased progressively over the last few years since the realization that for the majority of patients cognitive and behavioral limitations are more handicapping in the long run than physical or sensorimotor impairments. Thus, many rehabilitation facilities have expanded their head trauma programs to include a heavy emphasis on the cognitive and behavioral deficits as well as on interventions for the family system. The idea of ecological validity assumes that the most carefully designed study is of little practical value if it demonstrates change only on some measure irrelevant to the everyday functioning of the patient. In clinical settings, many factors that is difficult to control for practical or ethical reasons can undermine the interpretation of data. It is important to use homogeneous samples of brain-injured subjects in initial investigations and cross validate research on different patient populations." @default.
