The electrophoretic mobility of isolated pea chloroplasts was zero at a pH value of about 4.5–5.0, depending on the ionic strength. Millisecond-delayed fluorescence was studied as a function of the pH value of the suspension medium and of the chloroplast surface charge during the thermal inactivation of thylakoid membrane activity. The rate of inactivation of the photosynthetic activity is pH-dependent and reaches a minimal value at pH 6.0 for the suspension medium. The role of the surface charge density for the processes of inactivation of the photosynthetic membrane function is discussed. A correlation between the electrical surface charge density on the thylakoid membrane and the rate of direct and back electron transport in the reaction centre of Photosystem II is established." @default.
