• W1585791443 abstract "Objective: Our aim was to evaluate if the differences in the severity of multiple sclerosis between gender are determinated by age at onset of the disease.Background: The course of multiple sclerosis differs between men and women. Men usually have a worse prognosis than women.Methods: Patients followed between 1999 and 2012 fulfilling Poser or Mc Donald diagnostic criteria for MS with a disease duration of &gt 1 year and <30 years at time of EDSS measurement were included. The MS Severity Score (MSSS) was used as a measure of disease severity. Patients were stratified by gender and by age at disease onset (group 1: ≤45 and group 2: &gt 45 years). Comparisons were performed by univariate analyses (significant p <0.05)Results: 304 patients were included, 198 women (65.13%). 262 RRMS (86.18%), 25 PPMS (8.22%) and 17 SPMS (5.59%). In group 1 (257 patients) 65% were women. The mean MSSS in men was 4.38 ± 2.87 vs 3.01 ± 2.5 in women (p<0.001). 47 patients were included in group 2 (66% women). The mean MSSS in men was 5.11 ± 3.23 vs.4.67 ± 3.02 in women (p = 0.66).Conclusion: We found significant differencies in the severity of the disease between men and women when the onset was before 45 years, however, that difference was not observed when the onset of the disease was after 45 years old.
