- W1586009006 abstract "This chapter considers the interaction of ultrashort, ultrastrong laser pulses with solids. It also considers only coherent electron dynamics, which introduces a constraint on the duration of the laser pulse. The basic approximation, which can capture the main features of the electron dynamics in the periodic potential and the external electric field of the pulse, is an approximation of the tight-binding model. The chapter discusses the energy spectrum of the two-band model in a constant electric field. It presents the results of numerical calculations which illustrate the electron dynamics of the system and how these dynamics affect propagation of the laser pulse. The theory of the interaction of ultrashort optical pulses with solids, outlined in the chapter, provides not only a qualitative but also a quantitative description of the experiments on the propagation of optical pulses in solids." @default.
