- W1586156954 abstract "Measurements of the energy and angular distributions of low energy electrons inelastically scattered from a clean (111) surface of a silver single crystal show that many of the primary electrons undergo a number of scattering events with small energy loss and negligible angular scattering. These electrons can be diffracted out of the crystal in a manner identical to the usual LEED effect at that energy. Spectra obtained with small aperture electron energy analysers will show peaks at fixed emission energies due to electrons which have undergone inelastic scattering and are then diffracted out of the crystal in addition to the usual Auger emission peaks. These “diffracted inelastic” peaks are very strong in the emission from single crystals bombarded by low energy electrons. Measurements show that electrons which have suffered small energy losses are mainly emitted as the results of diffraction of the inelastically scattered primary beam whereas those suffering larger losses are more the result of inelastic scattering of the diffracted beams. The 4.0 eV loss observed for low energy electrons reflected from silver is tentatively attributed to excitation of the volume plasmon shifted from its nominal value of 3.78 eV by dispersion." @default.
