- W1586556721 abstract "The history of hot rolled asphalt is studied and an assessment is made of its performance to date; its defects are examined and the performance of polymer asphalt surfacings over the last five to six years, is assessed. Increased traffic volumes and axle loadings, together with extreme temperature conditions have shown that hot rolled asphalt to BS 594 fails to provide the requirements needed when exposed to heavy duty conditions. Many asphaltic binders in use today have little or no ductility at 0 degrees C. Polymer asphalts have been developed, which retain plasticity from -70 deg C to decomposition at 200 deg C. An improved, but more costly, surfacing material is produced which when laid at say 20 to 25 mm thickness will be more durable than 40 mm of conventional, but less expensive material. Details are given of the use of polymer asphalt cement in the repair of failed buried joints on elevated carriageways and a heavily trafficked concrete road. The authors suggest that texture depth should be evaluated not only before trafficking but should also be tested at regular intervals. The current single formulation specification is considered to be unsuitable for modern requirements and it is suggested that the availability of polymer asphalt binders should enable specific designs to be made for high speed or low speed traffic of varying volume and axle loading.
