- W1587215530 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter appraises the role of different factors in the hydrothermal synthesis of the zeolitic coatings, illustrating these with a number of examples. Application of a coating of zeolite crystals onto a microstructured substrate produces catalytic microreactors. Zeolitic coatings can be deposited on a substrate by means of slurry coating, wash coating, and seed or direct hydrothermal synthesis. The efficient use of microstructured catalytic reactors requires a shaping of the catalyst usually by deposition of thin catalytic coatings at the walls of the reactor channels. Zeolite crystals can be organized within a microchannel framework with high spatial precision on the micrometer scale. One of the main problems in using microstructured reactors for heterogeneously catalyzed reactions is the synthesis of the catalytic active phase. Advantages of coatings compared to micro pellet fixed beds or extrudates are an improved accessibility of the crystallites as well as the catalyst sites, an effective heat removal from the reaction zone via a metal substrate, and the absence of macro-pores in a single layer of crystals. Substantial progress has been made recently in the preparation of single layer zeolitic coatings on different substrate materials for application in microstructured reactors. Such reactors result in higher reaction rates and, in many cases, to higher selectivities toward the desired products compared to conventional methods. The synthesis time required to obtain stable defect-free zeolitic coatings remains rather long; 36 to 48 hours. However, the synthesis time can be substantially reduced through a fast heating mode. This can be brought about by preheating the autoclave or by applying microwave heating." @default.
