- W1587238049 abstract "As of October 1 1989 over 182000 cases of AIDS had been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from 152 countries. Global AIDS case reporting statistics remain biased by wide inter-country and inter-regional variations relating to the completeness of AIDS case detection and case reporting and delay. Completeness of reporting varies from 90% in some industrialized countries to less than 10% in some developing countries. As of June 1989 30 countries had yet to report to WHO any additional cases of AIDS since June 1 1988. Only 41 countries had forwarded information on cases which had been reported nationally in 1989. Cases which were diagnosed as far back as the early 1980s continued to be reported to WHO in 1989. In interpreting the AIDS case rates in the absence of estimates of the size of population at present risk of HIV infection for all countries the total population of the country is used as the denominator. This is why the highest 1987 AIDS case rates in the Americas were in the small island states with a rate of 36.8/100000 for Bermuda as compared to 10.2/100000 for the United States. The large number of AIDS cases which were being reported arose from HIV infections that had occurred in the 1970s and early 1980s. In mid-1988 worldwide an estimated 5-6 million individuals were infected with HIV. The majority of AIDS cases that can be projected for the next 5 years would be expected to occur even if HIV transmission ceased completely in 1989. It is projected that up to 75% of people infected with HIV will develop AIDS within 10 years and 95% within 20 years. Over the 1990s at least 3 million people of the 5 million already infected as of 1988 will develop AIDS. The public health challenge is to develop and strengthen health and social care systems and to reduce the further transmission of HIV." @default.
