- W1587498753 abstract "Twenty-two small-for-gestational-age newborn infants of toxaemic mothers had normal nerve conduction velocities, indicating normal peripheral nerve myelination. Muscle tone and general excitability were lower than normal, resembling in some respects the motor behaviour of pre-term infants. Thus, neonatal motor behaviour is unsuitable as a basis for an estimate of conceptional age in small-for-gestational-age infants of toxaemic mothers. In the infants in this study the abnormal motor behaviour was not due to symptomatic hypo-glycaemia, neonatal asphyxia, or any other overt postnatal illness. The maturation of the fetal nervous system was adversely affected by maternal toxaemia and intrauterine malnutrition. In the same infants of toxaemic mothers bioelectric brain maturation wad frequently retarded and/or abnormal. The consistently abnormal EEG phenomena could—if at all—only exceptionally be explained by perinatal hypoxia or postnatal hypoglycaemia and they occurred in the absence of any other overt postnatal illness. The results suggest that central nervous system maturation does not proceed independently of the nutritional status of the fetus." @default.
