- W1588126210 abstract "Rather than thinking of the ground as a heat source, it may be more useful to think of it as a thermal store, which is warmed up when heat is plentiful (summer). The stored heat is exploited when thermal energy is scarce (winter). Aestifer thermal storage is described by the ground's volumetric heat capacity: the amount of heat released per unit volume per degree change in temperature, expressed in J m−3 K−1. The temperature field within an aestifer is constrained by a lower constant flux boundary (geothermal heat flux), an upper constant temperature boundary (the average soil temperature) and the ground's thermal conductivity. Solar and atmospheric energy is probably a more important heat source for an aestifer than deep geothermal heat flux. An aestifer's thermal balance may be disturbed if more heat is extracted from it than is naturally replenished: the aestifer cools down until a new equilibrium is reached." @default.
