- W1589706252 abstract "Meningococcal disease remains a serious global health threat associated with high mortality and morbidity. Worldwide, the epidemiology of bacterial meningitis has changed dramatically in the last 2 decades following the introduction of new, highly effective conjugate protein/polysaccharide vaccines. The meningococcal conjugate vaccines elicit a T cell-dependent memory response that increases their effectiveness, resulting in an improved primary response to vaccination and a strong anamnestic response upon re-exposure. No evidence of increased autoimmunity has been found to be associated with meningococcal serogroup B infection. In September 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an advisory regarding the occurrence of Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) in five recipients of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4), but in 2010 the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) removed precautionary language from its recommendations, since more recent studies showed no increased risk of GBS in individuals receiving MCV4. Through the analysis of various cases of Henoch–Schönlein purpura and Bullous pemphigoid that occurred after meningococcal vaccination, we can conclude that the vaccination does not cause autoimmune diseases but may unmask autoimmune phenomena in genetically predisposed individuals." @default.
