- W1589849685 abstract "Abstract The role of alcohols and glycols, added at different stages during the preparation of alumina, in controlling porosity and surface area has been examined. Additives used before precipitation of aluminium hydroxides only have an effect when their adsorption is strong enough to allow replacement of the adsorbed water on the precipitate. With these additives, decreased Ostwald ripening and increased aggregation-cementation leads to greater microporosity and surface area in aluminas produced by calcination. Alcohol washing after precipitation produces more surface area and mesoporosity, apparently as a result of replacement of water by alcohol leading to lower surface tension and less pore collapse during calcination. These suggestions were borne out by experiments with additives containing one or two functional groups and of differing molecular weight." @default.
