- W1589898614 abstract "Structures in the environment are recognized without any effort, although these structures are always embedded in a variety of visual contexts. Visual stimuli can mostly be decomposed into many different structures. If perception is to abstract invariants for the recognition of units, the class of stimuli over which invariants is to be abstracted has to be specified. Recognizing that a certain object produces a stimulus structure is based on invariants abstracted from the diversity of possible stimuli produced by that object. Relationships between the given stimuli and those occurring as a consequence of actions are registered, and invariants are sought for the classes of stimuli when actions lead to uniform consequences. If such invariants are found, they are abstracted, and these, in turn, determine the contents of perception in terms of visual features that can be used to recognize the classes of stimuli for which a comparable consequence of a certain action can be anticipated. In this view, perceptions that underlie recognition serve to anticipate behavioral consequences. They should be understood as instruments for predicting the alterations of reality induced by one's own behavior, and they consequently serve as a means of controlling the outcome of behavior." @default.
